Solar Cells or Solar Panels are layman’s term for “Photovoltaic Cells”. I’m by no means an expert in photovoltaic (PV) systems but the topic interests me so I thought I would delve deeper.

Photovoltaic Cells convert sunlight into energy (photo=light, voltaic=electricity) by forcing energy from the sun into several layers of conductive material.

Iron Mountain Hosting uses photovoltaic cells made by Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi is a world leader in solar cells and has been researching them since 1974.

Although we often think of solar cells as part of tiny calculators, lets not forget that many of the man-made satellites orbiting earth are powered on Solar Cells created in Mitsubishi labs.

So it’s been asked many a time, how have you been around for 25 years when the internet was only “created” by Vice President Al Gore in the late 90s?

First off, many will dispute VP Al Gore’s claims but that’s another story for another day. But yes, our core business group is still the same since 1982. The only things that have changed are our location and businesses/industries.

We’ve been running our servers for several months straight now and we thought it’d be a good time to give our servers some well deserved R&R.
